Topic: What is Implicit Bias & How does it Influence My Work?

Session Description:
What are the biases we carry when we have attitudes towards people or associate stereotypes without our conscious knowledge? Come learn more about implicit bias and the attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions and decisions in an unconscious manner. In this interactive workshop, we will discuss the concept of implicit bias, how our personal experiences have influenced the bias we carry and how to identify and move past our blind-spots.

Learning Objectives:
1. Working knowledge of implicit bias and how we develop blind spots.
2. The influence implicit bias on our interactions with others.
3. The impact implicit bias can have on our recruiting, hiring and retention efforts.

Speaker Bio:
Tiffany Taylor Smith, M.S. Ed., a cultural competency consultant with experience in higher education and human resources, she currently serves in the newly created position of executive director for inclusive excellence education and professional development at the University of Dayton.
In this role, Taylor Smith leads the development, implementation and assessment of comprehensive, campus-wide professional development and training to promote and enhance intercultural competence, diversity, equity and inclusive excellence.
During the last 15 years, Taylor Smith has worked with education, business and community organizations to increase intercultural competence for both adults and students. In 2001, she founded TR Taylor Consulting, LLC., (now Culture Learning Partners) to help build better cross-cultural relations, navigate cultural diversity and increase cultural equity.
In addition to her consulting experience, Taylor Smith worked as an adjunct professor of psychology at Kean University and Seton Hall University in New Jersey for 11 years. She taught courses on life span development, child and adolescent psychology.
Before founding the consulting firm, Taylor Smith held various roles in human resource development, diversity and sales management with Procter & Gamble Distributing Company, working at the corporation’s Boston; Cincinnati and Cranford, New Jersey, offices. She earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York, and a master’s in education, specializing in counseling services, from Fordham University in New York.
A Dayton native, Taylor Smith graduated from Archbishop Alter High School in Kettering.
