Session Description and Speaker

Speaker: Michael Mercier

Topic: Smartphone Addiction & The Workplace: Its Impact On Employee Wellness & Productivity

Session Description:The issue of smartphone addiction exploded into the national consciousness in 2017 with a torrent of media coverage.
We learned that a large percentage of the population is addicted to their phones and that is by design - that Silicon Valley works with brain scientists and Psychologists to develop apps that are optimally addictive.
We also learned that research shows that smartphone addiction hurts us cognitively, socially, emotionally, and physically, and that it erodes workplace productivity.
In 2018 a backlash has formed against Silicon Valley and smartphone addiction. Individuals and institutions in every sector of society ---including corporations---are examining this problem for the first time, struggling to get a comprehensive perspective on it, and trying to figure out if there is any way they can address it.
Michael Mercier has developed a framework to help corporations think about how they can address this problem. In this presentation he will lay out the mechanisms of screen addiction, the compulsive behavior it generates, the negative consequences that these compulsive behaviors have on both workplace productivity and our personal lives, and a 3-pronged approach to addressing it that combines educating employees, setting reasonable rules and expectations, and transforming corporate culture.
