Topic: HR Basics: Tips, Traps, and Trends for HR Supervisors

Session Description:
An interactive learning session designed for new HR supervisors or professionals early in their career. On a day to day basis, HR professionals are often the first line of defense for a company when it comes to risk avoidance. This workshop will focus on understanding HR’s impact on the organization in the areas of legal compliance, hiring, performance management, and positive employee relations. Through an overview of critical federal laws including FLSA, EEO, FMLA, and ADA, participants will learn how to recognize when action needs to be taken. Participants will understand how to avoid common HR mistakes through a review of effective hiring practices, performance documentation, and positive employee relations. To encourage ongoing development, a brief review of resources available to HR professionals will be provided.

Learning Objectives:
1. Understand how they impact hiring, performance management, employee relations, training and development, and the overall success of an HR function.
2. Understand their basic responsibilities for and how to apply key federal laws (FLSA, EEO, FMLA, ADA).
3. Understand and know how to avoid common HR mistakes.
4. Know how to access resources for additional personal development.

Speaker Bios:
Virginia Hegwood earned a BA in HR Management from Antioch University McGregor. She has held senior leadership positions with large corporations including Gordon Food Service, the Dannon Company and Nestle’. Most recently, Virginia led the Talent and Organizational Development department at C&S Wholesale Grocers, a $41 billion company with facilities across the country. During her career, she has earned certifications in a number of leadership development assessments and coaching models as well as maintaining a Senior Professional in Human Resources designation for over 12 years. She has been a session presenter at the International Food Distributors Association’s national conference and numerous local and state conferences, workshops, and events.

In April, 2016, Virginia became an independent Organizational Development and HR consultant providing executive coaching, organizational development and design services, training workshops, and HR services to local organizations.
